Bimetallic Thermometer

The bimetallic thermometer operates based on two metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion. To improve temperature sensitivity, the metal strip is typically formed into a helical coil. When the temperature changes, the different layers of metal expand or contract by unequal amounts, causing the helix to tighten or loosen.
